Teatro Verde

Venice, Italy. 2018 - 2019

Collaborating with Fondazione Giorgio Cini on the restoration of the Teatro Verde, an outdoor theatre set in the gardens of the island of San Giorgio Maggiore.

Teatro Verde, an outdoor theatre set in the gardens of the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, was originally designed in 1952 by Luigi Vietti and Angelo Scattolin. Built with spare, unused materials from an earlier restoration of structures on the island, it is no longer functional.

Fondazione Giorgio Cini approached the Norman Foster Foundation to explore the feasibility of restoring the theatre as a functioning performance space. This project will not only restore the theatre’s structure to that of its original state but will also dramatically enrich its stature through the incorporation of a new structure. Carefully conceived and designed with respect to the theatre’s initial design and setting, this structure will additionally provide cover for a wider range of performances.
